Pain Relief Treatment With Acupuncture

At some times in our lives, most of us will experience substantial pain. Pain can be generated from an accident, injury, illness or some unknown stressor. Pain is our guidance system that is telling us that something is out of balance.

Very often, we in the West try to address our pain by ignoring it, hoping that it will go away, or by taking medications that mask pain for a limited time. Unless we address the pain and treat it, the pain will never truly go away. The pain may go away temporarily or it may get worse. Many times, I have seen the pain go deeper into the body.

A person may fall, hurt their shoulder, and take some over the counter medications that hide or dull their pain for a while. The side effects of over the counter medications can be hazardous and compromise a person’s health. Tylenol is toxic to the liver and Advil damages the kidneys, both of those examples are well known.

If untreated, after a period, the acute pain may be gone but a deeper pain has taken over. One of the most common is a pain that may restrict the movement of raising ones arms over the head, or with a slight twinge. Patients often report that on cold rainy days that darn shoulder is just plain sore. This can play out in every joint or part of the body.

Acupuncture has treated people with pain for thousands of years with no ill side effects; in fact, I tell my patients that acupuncture has side benefits. Acupuncture helps free up the blockage of Qi (energy) that prevents us from healing ourselves.

The Chinese determined long ago that energy (Qi) traveled throughout the body in little rivers or streams, called meridians. One comparison to use is that of a vegetable garden. The garden grows best when it has adequate sunlight and water and good soil. If a kink develops in the water hose and prevents the water from reaching the vegetables, the vegetables will wither and die. When the kink in the hose is freed up, the water will resume and nourish the garden. The same is true with our bodies, when the natural flow of our Qi is blocked because of physical or emotional stress, symptoms and illness will occur.

By placing very fine needles along the appropriate meridians in the body, it will act as a prod and enable out natural energy to flow freely which essentially enable the body to heal itself. Not only do specific pain issues improve, but the entire immune or energy system of the body improves. That is the wonderful thing about acupuncture, it is painless, no chemicals are injected into the body, and treatments are very relaxing.
