The most common cause of heel pain that I treat is Plantar Fasciitis. This is the band of tissue that connects the toes with the heal bone. When the plantar fascia is strained or becomes irritated it will cause great pain. Tiny tears in the ligament will tend to occur more if a person has high arches or flat feet. Poor fitting shoes without the proper arch support can also contribute to foot problems.

Well known common suggestions for reducing pain are:
Reduce the activity that is causing the pain
Apply an ice pack to the affected area
Towel stretching the foot and calf muscle stretches
Heel pads and/or orthodontics to help cushion the heel
Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to mask the pain

Being able to walk and run comfortably without pain is essential for everyone. For centuries acupuncture has helped both with eliminating the pain and healing this condition. In Chinese Medicine we learn that the liver and gallbladder control tendons and that a problem with those organs will often affect the tendons anywhere in the body.

When I talk with people who have tendon issues, the treatment principal is simple. I use electro acupuncture with magnets, but not needles, in the treatment area.

One of my patients, a middle aged gentleman who loves to play golf, came in complaining about foot pain and exhibiting a limp. Upon examination, I could see that the tendons were very tight. After treating him with electro acupuncture, he reported that pain decreased after just a few treatments, and total relief from pain came after the rest of the treatments.

I have helped many people over the years with tendon problems such as Plantar Fasciitis. If you have an issue with a pain in your foot or anywhere in your body or even with a restricted golf swing please call me at 770.905.5560 for a free consultation to discuss if acupuncture may be right for you.

Locations are convenient to people in the Atlanta and Alpharetta Georgia area.

In treating the root cause of infertility acupuncture can dramatically increases the chances for pregnancy.

Although the percentages may vary over time, the American Society for Reproduction reported that approximately 10% of women in the US are diagnosed as being infertile. Infertility is defined as one year of unsuccessful conception. The estimate is that 40% of infertility is attributed to male and 60% to females.

There are a variety of factors which affect pregnancy such as: poor quality of eggs, lack of ovulation, poor quality and numbers of follicles, thin endometrial lining, high follicle stimulating hormones, uterine fibroids, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, stress, infection, adhesions.

Chinese Medicine has treated fertility issues for 3,000 years. Acupuncture has been shown to increase blood flow to the uterus while thickening the uterine lining. This increases the chance of an ovum implanting on the uterus wall. Acupuncture also regulates the menstrual cycle and normalizes ovulation. As blood circulation improves it oxygenates tissue and cycles out toxic chemicals and cortisol.

It should also be no surprise that stress can be a devastating factor in preventing conception. Studies conducted have shown that women with high rates of stress are 92% less likely to become pregnant, and have a live birth.

With regular treatments acupuncture will re-balance the endocrine and sympathetic nervous systems which regulate reproductive hormones. Acupuncture releases serotonin and endorphins which have a calming effect on the body. Blood pressure can be lowered along with heart rate, often a feeling of total relaxation is reported following a treatment

Male sperm count has dropped almost by half over the past few generations. Modern lifestyle along with environmental stress, medications, and smoking has had a devastating effect on sperm count. Published studies have shown that acupuncture increases both sperm mobility and increases healthy sperm dramatically while also improving both the quality and sperm shape.

Many couples have invested a great deal of time and money in Western Medical procedures such as ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) and are reluctant to stop that treatment. This is a where Eastern and Western medicine can work extremely well together and is truly complementary. Studies have shown that acupuncture can increase the success rate of ART especially when acupuncture treatments are given prior to ART treatments.

A study conducted in Denmark showed that when acupuncture was given to women on the same day of an embryo transfer, both prior to and after the transfer, the group having received the transfer showed significantly higher conception and continued pregnancy rates.

Depending on the couple, acupuncture treatments will take effect in two to four months. Couples should not expect to become pregnant in the first two months of treatment. Acupuncture regulates the hormones and helps to bring the body back to balance and it takes time to do so.

PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is an anxiety disorder that may have an onset after experiencing a traumatic event that involves the threat of injury or death. This severe anxiety disorder can develop after a person experiences any event that creates psychological trauma. In effect, symptoms are a result of recalling and the repeated reliving of an event. Soldiers often experience recurring distressing memories, flashback episodes which recall the traumatic event. These events are burned into their consciousness.

Feelings of detachment, difficulty in concentration, exaggerated response to stimuli, irritability, outburst of anger, disturbed sleeping patterns are often reported. According to the National Center for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder one in thirteen Americans will experience some form of PTSD and 30% of these will go on to develop a chronic form of the disorder.

There are several treatment options for PTSD and the approach continues to be refined as more is learned about the disorder. Although the military has been criticized as slow to act in regards to PTSD, there are studies underway and some have already concluded. The studies validate that acupuncture helps to relieve symptoms associated with PTSD. The University of New Mexico is conducting a two-year study of the effects in treating PTSD with acupuncture. The researchers support using acupuncture for PTSD because it is showing to be effective in helping with insomnia, anxiety, depression, and pain disorder among the symptoms treated.

Migraine Treatment and Acupuncture

All migraine suffers know the misery of that painful throbbing headache that can last as long as 72 hours. These headaches can be absolutely debilitating affecting our daily lives with the inability to concentrate and even perform simple tasks. If finding a migraine treatment that works for you has been a challenge, I invite you to read this short article and contact me to discuss your situation.

Approximately 28 million Americans suffer from migraines. Often the main symptom is a throbbing headache usually on one side of the head, but this pain may shift from one side of the head to the other. Western medicine will usually treat migraines with over the counter medicines such as naproxen, ibuprofen, or Motrin or a stronger prescription may be used. When used too often, these medications can cause something called a rebound headache. Certain foods can also cause headaches to be triggered such as chocolate, red wine, cheese, MSG, not eating, poor sleep habits, and strong odors.

The good news is that acupuncture has been found to be highly effective and provides significant benefits for migraine sufferers. Many studies have shown the acupuncture proves to be a useful, cost effective treatment for chronic headaches. In head to head studies, acupuncture showed a more significant improvement in headaches than any pharmacological therapy, and with no side effects. Patients in the pharmacological group reported the following side effects: nausea, diarrhea, gas, burning sensation, weight gain, difficult breathing, stuffiness in the chest, vomiting.

I have noticed that my patients report that after receiving acupuncture both the intensity and frequency of headaches are noticeably less. My patients say that they have a higher quality of life and they use less medication, and miss fewer days of work. As I have been practicing now for 15 years, I will say that I really enjoy treating people who have migraines as the results are much more dramatic than with any other condition I treat. It is my firm and absolute belief that acupuncture treats migraines better than any other form of treatment. Week after week my patients report that they feel better and better. They report going from 3 headaches a month down to two, down to one and much less intense and much shorter. These headaches can be completely eliminated forever.

If you are a migraine sufferer, you can see benefits with just one acupuncture treatment. Generally it takes between 6 and 12 treatments to see substantial improvement. I can’t recall treating a migraine sufferer who has not benefited from acupuncture. Migraines don’t get better left untreated; your body needs some help in reducing their frequency and severity. I ask you to consider acupuncture as an option in your quest for relief from migraine headaches.

Face Rejuvenation with Laser Therapy

I have treated many patients with acupuncture for face rejuvenation which can be very effective. I have also seen remarkable results with something very exciting. That would be the Low Level LASER. The laser that I use in my office is known as a Cool Laser, which is safe and effective in helping to improve a wide range of conditions including skin or face rejuvenation. This Laser light activates tissue regeneration.

Laser light penetrates into the skin which increases circulation resulting in new blood lymphatic vessels being formed and collagen synthesis is enhanced. Laser light can actually enhance metabolism, accelerate healing, and relieve pain. The stimulation of cell function improves the way cells work, produce energy and communicate with each other.

When it comes to the face, results can be remarkable. This treatment smoothes and tightens the skin resulting in an improved image. Wrinkles will not totally disappear, however the laser will soften the appearance and improve the flexibility and elasticity of the skin. Laser therapy, used in conjunction with Acupuncture, herbs, vitamins and improved diet may also reduce how noticeable wrinkles are.

One of the most frequent cosmetic problems is acne. Laser therapy helps heal pustule and in most cases the skin responds to treatment spontaneously. Cool laser helps to improve inflammatory conditions of the skin such as dermatitis and eczema which doesn’t save a person’s life but can improve the quality of life by diminishing some of the superficial magnifications of the disease. I have had patients with herpes, which when a painful spot is treated before an eruption occurs the herpes usually doesn’t even appear. If treated after the eruption occurs, the healing is shortened by 50%.

When a person comes in for skin rejuvenation I usually suggest a course of treatment of once a week for 6 weeks or twice weekly for 4 weeks, which will show great results. Treatments are no more than 15 minutes long and are pleasant.

Laser treatment is also effective for other conditions such as Smoking Cessation, Pain Management and Weight Control. It is safe, and healing takes place from the light. There is no heat or discomfort associated with the Laser therapy session.

Athletes are able to heal more quickly from sports injuries today. Treating sports injuries with acupuncture is part of that reason why some are able to heal faster. Many sports injuries can be classified as either a strain or a sprain. Sports injuries can be placed into three phases: acute, sub acute and chronic. The aspect of Time separates these phases.

The acute phase will occur within the first 72 hours following an injury. The affected region may show swelling, inflammation with discoloration, decreased range of motion, mild or severe localized pain. Often a person is unable to put full weight on a limb, and importantly may show a decrease in their range of motion. After 72 hours and up to about 3 months following an injury the sub acute phase is in play. This phase is crucial in which the acupuncturist skills can ensure a rapid recovery. Patients often report that their pain has decreased along with swelling and range of motion has also improved. At that point an athlete may feel like discontinuing treatment since pain is often greatly reduced.

Pain should not be the indicating factor in determining maximum medical improvement. Unfortunately athletes find that even though pain is diminished they still have a significant decrease in their range of motion, making them more susceptible to reinjure.

Recently professional sports teams have started to utilize acupuncture. The San Francisco Giants have added an acupuncturist to their staff. Like most athletes, baseball players can get pretty banged up as well. Their head athletic trainer was quoted as saying that his players definitely get back into the game more quickly because of their acupuncture treatments adding that the players love the treatments. Acupuncture can actually help heal injuries because it helps increase the immune system which enhances the healing process. Muscle tension is also decreased, resulting in more strength, flexibility and range of motion.

Acupuncture is effective in helping reduce muscle strains, low back pain, hamstrings, shoulder issues, muscle tightness and just about any other type of sports injury. Professional and amateur athletes have discovered that acupuncture can help accelerate the healing process.

Treating Asthma with Acupuncture

Good news, Atlanta is no longer listed as the number one city when it comes to people with asthma, but it still comes up among the top ten cities in the country. Is it any wonder why people are looking for relief, and finding that treating asthma with acupuncture helps?

More than 22 million Americans suffer from asthma with symptoms such as wheezing, night coughing, and shortness of breath, chest tightness and pain. It has been noted that people with asthma have twice the risk of developing anxiety and depression as people without this affliction. That is not surprising as the oriental medical belief says that everything in the body is connected. Nothing exists in isolation, what effects one part or of the body affects the rest of the body.

Western medicine can help control asthma but the problem with western medical drugs is that they carry strong side effects such as irritability, depression, and even thoughts of suicide. As opposed to western medicine, oriental medicine actually has a more complex understanding of treating disease such as asthma.

In treating a disease, an acupuncturist will treat the patient by mirroring the symptoms. For example if a patient presents with symptoms such as wheezing with yellow sputum and heat sensations it would be determined that something called “damp heat” is causing the problems. I may choose a formula that will clear lung heat, and dissolve phlegm. This will help to relieve wheezing and dyspnea. Sometimes a person can show cold issues that will require a different acupuncture treatment and a different herbal formula. This may for example have one that is not cooling but warming and will also dry what we call “internal dampness”. There are actually about a dozen different formulas that I may use to counter the effects of asthma. I’ll always ask an asthma patient if it is more difficult to breathe in or breathe out during an attack. When a patient tells me that its more difficult breathing out, I know we have to focus on the lung energy, when its more difficult breathing in, then the focus is on kidney energy.

People are surprised to find out that children respond very well to acupuncture. For children a condition like asthma has not had a chance to be ingrained by years of bad habits and conditioning. Acupuncture helps strengthen the immune system and with a stronger immune system it’s possible to throw off pathogenic factors that prevent kids from achieving great health. Children with asthma react very quickly to acupuncture treatments and I enjoy seeing how fast their condition improves.

Acupuncture and Weight Loss

Acupuncture and Weight Loss might be referred to as a dynamic duo when treating obesity. Indeed, obesity has become a very common health problem in our society and many people are looking for answers with the majority of Americans overweight and one third obese. Many eat the Standard American Diet (SAD) with fast food restaurants challenging us at every street corner and the harried pace of our days. When it comes down to it, after all the fad diets, drugs, drinks and energy bars ultimately there are few successful treatment options. The drug treatments that available are either often not effective or carry a risk of serious side effects. A person should examine the intake of the amount of food, and the types of food, but how they think about food.

Often common ailments accompany obesity, these include:
Irregular menstrual flow
Depression with mood swings
PMS, irregular menstrual flow
Skin irruptions which is caused by toxic heat in the blood
Exhaustion and fatigue
Irregular bowl movement

Acupuncture which has shown to be effective for numerous health issues for thousands of years can make a difference in weight loss. It is not a quick fix way to drop the pounds but works in a gradual reduction method, not too fast but usually steady.

While losing weight, these ailments can also be addressed and corrected. Acupuncture and herbs can help to increase energy and metabolism, suppress appetite, and eliminate the accumulation of water and internal dampness. To see if you have internal dampness roll down your socks and look to see if they leave an imprint on your legs.

Acupuncture will strengthen the digestive and endocrine system. By stimulating the digestive system both the spleen and stomach will become more efficient at transforming and transporting food energy. This will then decrease the appetite and you feel like eating less. When we get our metabolism in order the body regulates the amount of calories we consume.

Acupuncture and weight loss are both good things to add to your “to-do” health list. Patients who are overweight may have problems with joints and lower back pain in part, because of their weight. Although acupuncture can help many conditions, all my patients want to know how much weight they can loose and how long will it takes to lose that weight. The answer is that all patients are different and lose weight at their own speed. Some patients can lose weight right away, while others don’t lose until after a month. At some point, patients do notice the change. They crave foods less, think about eating less often and this helps them to less overall. Just one acupuncture treatment per week in combination with an herbal formula, and someone could expect to lose a pound a week. With diet modification and exercise perhaps one and a half pounds a week. Acupuncture is one of the safest and most effective medical modalities and is used throughout the world today.

Lower back pain is one of the main reasons people seek relief from an acupuncturist. A great majority of us will suffer from lower back pain at some point in our lives. Over the last few decades the use of acupuncture to treat this condition has increased dramatically, especially from those reporting recurring back pain. Multiple studies show that acupuncture is a safe and effective procedure which can produce lasting results without side effects of the more traditional pain remedies.

For example, in a Swedish study, acupuncture patients not only reported greater decreased pain than a placebo group but reported fewer episodes of sleep abnormalities. By the end of this study, it was found that total the intake of analgesics dropped significantly for the acupuncture group as opposed to the placebo group. This is important as most Americans are unaware how toxic over the counter drugs are to our internal organs. One result I found interesting in the study was that acupuncture was found to be more effective for women. The researchers conveyed that this was because their pain may have been related to estrogen receptors in their central nervous system.

For many years I have treated people with lower back pain issues. While practicing in New York I treated thousands of patients, many that had multiple injuries. While lower back pain was often one of the most debilitating injuries, many also suffered with headaches, knee pain, and many other issues resulting from automobile accidents.

I witnessed many recoveries in my patients over those years, as my acupuncture treatments helped their bodies return to a natural balance and wellness. My patients would come in with great pain and barely able to walk. Usually within several treatments the results were remarkable. Often, my patients wanted to know why acupuncture worked so well for them. I would explain that as a result of the trauma they experienced in the accident, the energy (chi) in their body was blocked and the body was unable to heal itself. When I applied the acupuncture treatments to the correct locations on their body, it unblocked the energy and allowed it to flow freely again. The body is able to help heal itself, it’s that simple.

Arthritis affects millions of Americans today, and is the leading cause of disability. Learn three things you can do to lessen its pain and affects in your life, and improve your overall balance and health.

Treating Arthritis Pain With Acupuncture and Healthy Lifestyle Changes

As we age, people show signs of arthritis with degeneration of joints. According to the Centers for Disease Control, arthritis is the most common cause of disability. There is good news though. Millions of people through the years have found relief and improved conditions when treated with Acupuncture, in conjunction with healthier lifestyle choices.

The two most common forms of arthritis are osteo and rheumatoid. They have different causes but share the same result, persistent joint pain.

Osteoarthritis is more commonly found in America. Joint cartilage breaks down which results in stiffness and pain. All joints in the body can be affected especially if a history of stress has taken place.

Rheumatoid arthritis can affect the joints and other areas of the body including the heart, blood and lungs. The affected joint can lose its shape, which can result in loss of normal movement.

Acupuncturist practitioners see arthritis as a blockage of Qi (pronounced chee) which is the body’s energy. During treatment, the acupuncturist will evaluate their patient and determine where the blockage is. It is at those points where the acupuncturist will place the needles for treatment. This treatment will enable the Qi to start moving again.

Patients may be surprised to see that acupuncture needles placed in arms and legs where they have no arthritic pain. This is because of the theory of meridians; that is where the body’s energy travels in pathways much like rivers and streams. Such flows meander all over the body. If there is a rockslide, or trees and branches clog up a part of a river, much of the river is affected. There can be flooding upstream and reduced flow and water reaching downstream.

When the rocks, trees and branches are removed from the river, it resumes its natural course. It is the same for us and our energy system, when we remove the blockage that is causing our symptoms the body is able to resume its natural course, and symptoms are diminished.

I tell my patients is that once we remove the blockage, the body can work to heal itself faster. This is much like a river flowing back where it belongs after a blockage is removed. The body is always trying to bring itself back to where it should be (homeostasis).

An acupuncturist will also often talk about lifestyle and dietary changes. A healthy diet can play a crucial role in controlling arthritis. If someone is overweight, losing extra pounds can reduce stress to the joints. Acupuncture can also help with weight loss and improving your overall health.

It is well learned in Oriental medicine that avoidance of certain foods that are considered “damp” can also have a positive effect. Damp foods are dairy, citrus, and greasy or fried. Foods that can have a beneficial effect include Ginger, which has a natural anti-inflammatory action, fresh Pineapple, which contains Bromelain, which is an enzyme that reduces inflammation. Cherries also reduce joint pain and inflammation related to arthritis. Cold water fish that contains omega 3 fatty acids. Finally, Turmeric is another great anti-inflammatory.

We have only touched on a three ways to reduce the pain of arthritis. Bringing your body back in balance with a holistic combination of Acupuncture, better foods and exercise may help you maintain or regain flexibility and reduce your overall pain.
